Design #1:
Fig 1.2 Graphic Design Work
Description:
Looks vintage while being spontaneous. Figure heads who are respected are doodles upon with simple lines and bright plastic like colours that can only be achieved with modern technology. The lines and shapes contrast a lot with the person, who is from a period that art style prefers ornate realistic. This throws back to dada, nonsensical to protest against the aestheticism of modern capitalism.
Design #2:

Fig 1.3 Graphic Design Work 2
Description:
I like the overall vibe of geisha and the worn out street posters. It has a cut and paste feel with the dress made out of a collage of flyers, yet the whole thing looks unanimous. The background has an interesting texture, it looks like ripples on an ashy wall, looks trippy and unworldly. The colour scheme has primary colours that look regal and has an asian influence.

Fig 1.4 Graphic Design Work 3
Description:
The retro feel of the poster whilst talking about conditioning society into a certain standard, an issue prominent at that era. I like how surreal it is with cut out body parts like ears and brain along with water pipes. The shade of the colour is aged pastel, an homage to the colours of magazines at that time. The texture of the poster also alludes to the grainy paper quality in the past.
EXERCISE 2: PHYSICAL COLLAGE
We were assigned to make collages from cut out magazines. I found all of these graphic elements from Aeon and Ikea magazines. I am surprised by the text and imagery they have. The first composition I tried something more organic, diagonal pop of colour. The second composition I utilised approximate symmetry, and a fun diagonal text along the lid of the box. The third I tried symmetry, the end yellow text looks very intentional and satisfying.

EXERCISE 3: OBJECT SELECTION
We learned how to put objects into scenes. We learned to remove background from objects. And how to create shadow using brush and blur filter. Before this I initially copy paste the selection. Though non destructive, it is hard to make changes. As it requires to redo the selection if wanted to add anything. Using layer masks are a life saver.
Selection: Object Selection Tool/Select Subject > Select and Mask > Quick Selection Tool > Output to New Layer with New Mask > Layer Mask > Brush
Shadow: Brush > Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

EXERCISE 4: PORTRAIT SELECTION
We learned to select portraits. We used the poster of Shazam and a female portrait. It is nice to have this skill as I have seen people making art pieces or collages for personal reasons. It is the same as the object selection, with the only additional feature required is the Refine Edge Brush Tool. To make the hair more defined without background.

EXERCISE 5: DOUBLE EXPOSURE
For this week we did double exposure making a collage of the portrait from last week and some trees, birds and clouds. The tree is masked with the face. While the clouds and the bird are outside the mask making it have a sense of contrast. This would be the introduction to our project 2 part 2.

EXERCISE 6: HEARST MANSION & RECOLOURING BLACK AND WHITE
We made portraits blend in the Hearst Mansion. By using colour adjustments, shadow, relfection, selection. We also learned to recolour and black and white photo. I went for a more natural magazine route. With the background being the complementary colour of the skin, greyish blue against beiges. I really liked the end result, and to think it came from a black and white photo with colour adjustments.

EXERCISE 9: BLENDING MODE
Blending modes are a great way to apply subjects that are intangible or have transparent qualities. We are covering two blending modes, screen and multiply. Screen is for keeping white subjects, while multiply is for keeping black subjects.
