WEEK 7
VISUAL RESEARCH
I first scoured the Internet to find my options. I decided to settle on a loose abstract portrait style. With negative space and additional elements to pair along with it.
The two main elements I want to introduce to the portrait is shells and space. Shell being a literal form of the saying shell of a human body. And space is a similar for the human subconscious mind vast and unending. It also encapsulates how I feel towards myself, I am still exploring what it means to be me. Here is my mood board of the two main elements.
DRAFT 1
The face is made of shells, as a literal way of the saying shell of a human body. There is an opening on the head revealing space, as it is similar to the subconscious mind, vast and unending. There are planets, stars and comets floating out, like the various thoughts in the mind. Some small, some big, some come and go. The face has streaks and dots to resemble those of the shell, and their arrangement is affected by everything that has happened throughout life.
I initially went through with the traditional route, having a pencil sketch. I end up changing the medium to digital, since I think it better suits the sketch and the vision I have in mind.

WEEK 8
DRAFT 2
After feedback, I altered the space to have larger negative space. It does look more surreal. Also added a satellite to symbolise me understanding the ecosystem that is my mind.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 8
Specific Feedback: The right hair can be removed to show more space. The night sky can be split half so there is a day and a night. Can add a satellite too.
REFLECTION
Experience:
These week due to circumstances, it has been solely digital. This has the additional feature of sharing each others work. I like to see different interpretation of the self portrait and various take on it. The feedback provided in class helps me explore new ideas I had not thought of, and better drives home the idea.
Observations:
I developed a better eye over the course of the assignment. In exercises, I went from not really satisfied with my work, to in the end more satisfied with it. This project 1 output is my most satisfied work out of the previous works. I hope to see more improvement to come.
Findings:
I like that it is more about the exploration and effort that counts. We are encouraged to explore an assortment of ways we want to go about our idea. Considering multiple options can help to compare each idea, making a better end decisions.
