LECTURES

WEEK 6: PHOTO MANIPULATION IDEATION

Photo Manipulation
-Photograph manipulation involves the transformation of a photo using various techniques to achieve desired results
-It is an art form, that required skill and an active imagination to create an illusion

WEEK 7: DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Exposure: the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor or film
Main camera parts:
1. Camera body: shutter, image sensor
2. Camera lens: aperture/iris
Exposure settings: IRIS, shutter speed, SIO

Aperture
- Control the flow of light entering the lens
- Measured by f-stop, f/1, f/1.4, f/2
- Lower f-number indicate larger lens opening

Shutter Speed
- Shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film for a specific amount of time
- Measured in seconds, 1/1000 s, 1/500 s 1/250 s

ISO
- Refers to the sensitivity of the camera's sensor
- Some common settings include 100, 2pp, 400
- Lower ISO number equates to lower light sensitivity and finer grain

Lens Perspective
Wide angle lens: For landscape or street photography
Standard lens: Provide a similar representation of what the human eye sees of visual angle and perspective
Tele lens: Isolating far distanced objects

Focal Length
- The measurement (millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera's sensor
- Shorter focal length indicates wider angle or view

Depth of Field
- Proportion of image that in focus
- Smaller aperture indicates greater depth of field

DSLR vs Smartphone
- DSLR are specialised to take images, smartphones are more versatile
- DSLR have larger lenses and sensors than smartphones

PHOTO SHOOTING WITH DSLR AND LIGHTING SETUP

Focal Length: Controlled by zoom ring
ISO: Exposure & Noise
Aperture: Exposure
Shutter Speed: Motion blur

WEEK 9: DIGITAL SURREALISM

Realism vc Surrealism
Realism: uses subject matter from the ordinary reality, it is often non exotic or extraordinary
Surrealism: Explores the subconscious mind, subject matters are often dreamlike or distorted reality

Surrealism
-Defies logic, focuses on dreams and the subconscious mind
-Inspired by Freud, Dada artists and Surrealists like Salvador Dali
-Dadaism is an anti war art movement, artworks are often satire and nonsensical

Digital Surrealism
-Express artist's perception of themselves
-Dreamlike symbolic images, illogical juxtapositions, combinations of ordinary objects, childlike design
1. Sketch
2. Finding Reference
-It's best when it perceives as real, although the subject matter doesn't exist, furthers the juxtapositions
-Try the best of our ability, only by attempting we can learn how to improve upon it.

WEEK 8

PROJECT 2C: CONCEPTUAL PRODUCT PHOTOSHOOT

I did some visual research, I noticed people incorporate daily objects with food. So I decided to choose the dishwasher soap as my base, and the lemon would be replace the dishwasher body. It also is simple enough that it achieves non sequitor. I drew a sketch of how it would look like.

I later thought that I could push the surrealism further. So I came up with extra two sketches. The first is a apple sliced in half with a book spine in between. The other one is a bowl, but the outside of the bowl is a lemon skin, and the inside of the bowl is lemon flesh.

WEEK 9

I decided to go with the apple book, an homage to the mac book. I took pictures for the lemon prior, and I realised the camera quality is not ideal, can't really see the texture of the lemon. So I utilised online images of a sliced apple, book spine and the desk background.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 7

General Feedback
Clipping can help utilise the positive space in objects to make it look dreamlike or subconscious, achieving Surrealism.

WEEK 8

General Feedback
Photo editing tools are great for combining different elements and making them look real and convincing. Curves are powerful tool to restore black and white image to colourised images.

WEEK 9

General Feedback
Surrealism is best achieved when it is physically hard to replicate, and only achievable through photo manipulation, helps make the subject matter more surreal.

REFLECTION

Experience:
The exercises makes starting the project less daunting, as we used the skills required on a minor scale. Showing the process also helps us to better comprehend the steps taken to achieve a result. I liked the recorded tutorials as they are short and concise, perfect for when we needed to rewind and understand a part.

Observations
I have a better eye for the quality of the work, and that helps a lot during the making process. I am more satisfied with the submission of assignment 2 than assignment 1. It is cleaner and thus easier on the eyes. I also learned that watching content is as important as making. Observing how others proceed with their work can give insights, that can be incorporated in our own work.

Findings
There are a lot of photo editing techniques that creates the pictures seen online. It is nice to see in depth of the editing process behind the images. From the camera settings, to software application techniques, each of them combined produces the images with the desired effect.
