LECTURES
WEEK 6
Typography in Different Medium
-Exists not only on paper but on multitude of screens
-Subject to fluctuating parameters such as the operating system, system fonts, device and the screen
Print Type
-Caslon, Garamond, Baskerville
-Having elegant and intellectual characteristics and highly readable when set at small font size
Screen Type
-Optimized and modified to enhance readability and performance onscreen in a variety of digital environments
-Taller x-height, wider letterforms, open counters, heavier thin strokes and serifs, reduced stroke contrast, and in some designs modified curves and angles
-Open spacing, improves character recognition and overall readability in non-print environment
Hyperlink
-A word, phrase or image that one can click on to jump to a new document or new section in the current document
-Found on all web pages, allowing users to click on one page to another
Font Size for Screens
-16 pixel text on screen is equivalent to text printed in a book, though it varies for reading distance
-People tend to read close, texts are set to 10 points
-At arm's length, texts are at least 12 points
System Fonts for Screen/Web Safe Fonts
-A device's pre installed font selection are based on its operating system, each operating system varies from each other
-Web safe fonts appear across all operating systems, a small collection of fonts that overlaps from Windows, Mac and Google
Pixel Differential Between Devices
Different screens such as PCs, tablets, phones and TVs have different sized pixels
100 pixels on laptop is different from 100 pixels on a TV
Static Typography
-Minimal characteristic in expressing words
-Traditional characteristics such as bold and italic offer a fraction of expressive potential of dynamic properties
Motion Typography
-Temporal media offer opportunities to make fluid, kinetic and dramatic types
-Film title credits present typographic information through animation
-Motion graphics, especially brand identities of film and television production companies, increasingly contain animated type
-In music videos and advertisements, texts are set in motion following the rhythm of a soundtrack

INSTRUCTIONS
WEEK 6
I chose The impact of Bauhaus on modern culture as my editorial text, I have a preference for factual articles as they are concrete and educational. I first sketched out some variations of layout. I wanted the number 100 in the composition, to emphasise the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. I proceed to arrange the number on various alignment and sizes.

WEEK 7
There are a couple of stuff I did not foresee when making the sketches. Like if I did 4 columns for the 00's of 100, the line length would not be optimum. So I had to work around it. The first attempt is asymmetry, while the second I went for symmetry. I ended up liking the second one more because it is cleaner. The alignment of the 1, title, body text is also satisfying.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 7
Specific Feedback: Nice word play. The spanning of text is not advisable. Find an alternative.
REFLECTION
Experience:
The ability to self assess will allow independent self learning in the future. It is a skill that will get better with more practice. Feedback was also provided in class session. Seeing other people's work provides extra experiences to learn from. The specific feedback brought light to blind spots that was not considered.
Observations:
Getting used to making multiple alterations. It is fine to not produce a great piece at the start. Trial and error is a normal part of the learning process. I should get comfortable with attempting.
Findings:
We can take what we learned from the first project and implement in the next one. The manipulation of text can be applied on the title to make it more personable and iconic. Composition of layout is the foundation of a editorial design. Studying other professional's work gives an idea of a successful execution.
FURTHER READING
The book is named Letterforms : Typeface Design From Past to Future, it is written by Timothy Samara. The book covers the history of type design. The medium of text is initially from clay and sticks. Text itself look more pictorial. As trading and business become more common, the Sumerians came up with abstract symbols to replace the pictorial signs. The romans while expanding their territory, unified their writing, the process of painting on letters first before carving it created serifs.
War and poverty lead to dropping literacy rates, and typography became associated with power. Later on conflict diminished and writing was standardised once more. Letters are sort to larger and smaller scale, punctuation is also introduced. The Crusades introduced Arabic numbers and the symbol zero.
The rise of information during the Renaissance, intellectual activity is widespread and the first movable type system was invented by Bi Sheng of China. Gutenberg developed a press to make even spacing between lines of text. Type design transitioned rounder as humanism rised and intuition and legibility is favoured. People also started using text size to convey titles, subtitles and body texts. Type faces such as bold, regular and italic were also integrated.
It is interesting to see how historical events affected typography. It is fascinating to see historical events read on textbooks impact the very text we use right now.
