INSTRUCTIONS

WEEK 8
I decided to do some visual research on fonts I would be interested in producing, as I had no idea of my options. I wanted something more dramatic and practical. I like the typewriter style and the vintage logos. So I decided make a sketches based on those influences.

WEEK 9

I ended up choosing the second font, because the thicker vertical strokes increases readability. I value functionability for my first font, in fact a bit too much, as you can see it is quite a textbook font. I constructed the font in Adobe Illustrator. I made an effort to produce a font that resembles the sketch I made.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 9

General Feedback
It is encouraged to explore more alternative fonts. Add some twist to it, so it is unique and really personalised.

WEEK 10

Specific Feedback
Curved parts on P and R, and the G spur needs some work. T bar should be the same as E arm. Hashtag is done inadequately. The exclamation mark top part can be flat to resemble the flat type. Comma tail needs some work too.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I gained a greater appreciation for the font designers and the work they do. I got a glimpse and got to make my own font hands on, familiarising myself with the process. I also now appreciated the very font that I am typing right now too.

Observations
Exploring stuff that are unfamiliar, outside of comfort zone, can give new knowledge that can be utilised. The feed I have right now are all very formal type, and that influenced the end product. I would keep in mind to not be comfortable with the status quo and go search for other works and influences, when working on my next project.

Findings
I caught myself analysing fonts when I was in bookstores, and I got to see traces of the font designers creating a font specifically for the book title. Font is also an art medium and a way of expression.

FURTHER READING

This book is titled Design School: Type : A Practical Guide for Students and Designers, written by Richard Pouline. It mainly covers about layout. It is a important element along with placement of text, size and colour. It has been around since Sumerian cuneiform on clay tablets, Egyptian hieroglyphics of funeral tombs, Roman inscriptions or Renaissance manuscripts. Understanding it can help better expression of layout in works.

The layout can help or enhance the understanding of the content. There are absolute and relative measurement systems. Absolute measurement system is a standard. Such as the Point and Metric system. The type size has always been measured by points, it was later unify to 1/72 inch, so it fits the 72 pixel per inch (PPI) resolution. Relative measurement systems are linked to he type size. Em is the width of the widest letter. En is half an em. Units are em subdivided. The subdivision is typically is from 18 to 64, but technology allows for up to 1000.

Proportion systems is a systematic relationship between elements. The divine proportion is the first to describe a proportion system. The golden section is approximately 8:13, and founded all over nature. Fibonacci sequence is the series of numbers, whose the sum of two previous numbers. Dynamic rectangles are squares extended to a desired shape, like 1:2, 2:3, 1:3. Villard diagram is divisions of thirds, fourths, fifths, resulting in 2:3:4:6 ratios.
