Final Project: Visual Analysis
LECTURES
TOPIC 8: VISUAL ANALYSIS
-Analyse the visual elements and principles in a design, and how a designer communicates ideas using the properties
-Sharpening visual literacy can help practice judgment skills and form own outlook
Phase 1: Observation
Observing and identifying visual elements of the design. It is important to not read about the work beforehand.
Phase 2: Analysis
Think about the effect specific visual elements have on us the viewer. Make statements about the work based on the observations made.
Phase 3: Interpretation
Using facts from trustworthy published sources, analyse the meaning and purpose of the deasign.

WEEK 11-12: VISUAL ANALYSIS
Fig 1.1: Doaa Eladl

For the theme reduced inequalities. I chose to cover gender inequality. This illustration is made by Doaa Eladl, a female artist in Arab. She often covers women's right issues. She depicts issues with a heavy dose of satire and does not hold back. This piece is actually the more subtle ones. I chose to bring attention to the income and social inequalities present in gender inequality.
Observation
This design is in a landscape format. Depicting multiple hands in the waves with a figure with long hair and dress in a boat. There is text on the sail. It has black outline inking, with coloured based and slight shading. The shapes are organic as they try to replicate real life objects. The figure proportions are cartoonised as a stylistic choice. There is a lot of blue and a small pinch of red, with other neutral colours like greys, whites, browns, black. Overall mood from the colour palette is muted.
Analysis
Contrast is used throughout the whole piece. From proportion, line of action, hue, saturation. Proportion is also used, the waves are big and take up most of the space, the figure which is the focal point, is small. It helps to convey the meaning of differences in power. In balance, the piece utilises golden ratio within the waves of hands, it gives a sense of overwhel. Rule of third is also used in the placement of the focal point figure. For movement, the waves line of action is twisting and curved, while the figure and the sail are straight diagonal. This makes the figure standing even more prominent. The end of the wave also points to the focal point figure, utilisation of leading lines. Repetition is used in the amount of hands in the wave, to really push the sense of overwhelm. Emphasis is shown through colour. Colour theory wise, complementary colour scheme is used, with the bright red contrasting against the blues. Saturation is also utilised to the fullest, the focal point is bright saturated red, while the blue is dull and desaturated. Overall the colour palette are more formal and neutrals, setting the serious tone of the work.
Interpretation
This is the piece that won the 2015 "Cartooning for Peace". An annual event held by the World Press Cartoon. This illustration is the classic newspaper comic style. Often political and social satire, describing the absurdity of the political situation. In this case, the artist chooses to focus on gender inequality. The stylisation helps pushes the satire more. Modern political cartoonist utilise visual metaphors to address complicated political situations, summarising current event with a humorous or emotional scene. One of the early political comic is the Emblematical Print on the South Sea Scheme (1721), by William Hogarth is one of the early satirical work covering the disastrous stock market of 1720s named as the South Sea Bubble. The cartoon style started developing and recognised in the 1843, "the term "cartoon" then meant a finished preliminary sketch on a large piece of cardboard, or cartone in Italian." It started appearing in newspapers by the mid 19th century.
WEEK 13-14: DESIGN
Visual Research
I searched up styles that are similar to the colourised comic style Doaa Eladl has. It is notable that all of these series have different art styles despite being in the same genre. The shading is minimalistic as there are only streaks of highlights in the objects in the Dennis comics. The characters proportion are very stylised as they use cicle like shapes for the hair and face, with facial features only having dots for eyes.
For the Superman comic the shading is also minimalistic with only solid highlights. These are comics after all, it was simplified to make production more efficient. Human proportions they stick closer to the real world proportion.

I wanted to make a play on the word objectify. It is dehumanising, so the idea will be uncomfortable and that is also a nice effect. If it causes a shift in the viewer's feelings, the art has made a statement. The object I thought of is vase, it is a decorative item and is used to put floral arrangements. I went for a nesting doll with a white and dark blue marble to reflect those of a vase. I thought a contrasting situation would be if the person is giving a meeting analysis. It will put into perspective how only seeing people as items affects their life.
Fig 1.4: Sketch
I changed the figure to be a vase with a face on it, it has the added benefit of being surreal. The composition was changed to be more visually intriguing using rule of thirds. I took time to think why the artist's work is disturbing. It hit me that people like pretending everything is fine and perfect, we all know the world is not perfect. I want to push the disturb, so the item shapes language are rounded, so it looks inviting at first glance.
FINAL SUBMISSION
FEEDBACK
WEEK 11
Specific Feedback: It has a great direction, the mentioning of principles before I explain them is a nice touch. There are a couple ways to convey my point more efficiently.
REFLECTION
Experience:
I learned how to analyse an artist piece and be inspired by it. I also learned how to self reflect to improve on your own. Knowing how to analyse a piece is a skill that can be practiced.
Observations:
My description skills have a lot of room for improvement. In art communicating the design properly through descriptions is also a central part of the execution. I will keep a look out on having a clear definitive explanation of my thought process of the artwork.
Findings:
Analysing other artist's work is nice study case, we are able to learn how they work on the piece. We can also implement the new findings into our own work.
FINAL REFLECTION
I have learnt about design principles, self expression and applying it all to an artwork. I enjoy that the topic is open ended, so we get to interpret it on our own. I part I least enjoy is my skill not reaching the level I wanted it to be, so the end product is not as satisfying to me. Through this module, I learned to be comfortable in the process, it will involve a lot of back and forth, that is the natural progression of trying something new. I think my skill set, eye for judging and persistence in attempting again has improved, it's still not great but it was better than what it was before. I understand the module is solely for exploration and not for the physical skill of making, so I thought the module did a great job to fulfill that role.
