LECTURES

Week 5: Card Sorting Method

Nielsen Norman Group
- Users have pointed out that a major UX issue is when desired information in a product is frequently placed in unexpected places.
- One suggested solution is to involve consumers in creating a product's structure and navigation.

What is card sorting?
- Effective way to comprehend how consumers organise and classify data
- It assists in choosing an organizational structure that complements users' mental models.
- This method influences content strategy, website or app architecture, and navigation menu design.

Types of card sorting
1. Open
2. Closed
3. Hybrid
4. Remote

1. Moderated
- During study sessions, a facilitator is present.
- Qualitative insights (15 samples)

2. Unmoderated
- Facilitator is not present.
- Quantitative data collection (>50 samples)
- Quicker and less costly.

Wildcard Categories
Purpose
- Flexibility: Let participants to arrange the information anyway they see fit.
- Insight: Provide greater insights into the mental models of users by revealing novel or surprising groupings and labels.
- User Centric Design: Make sure the finished information architecture accurately reflects the thoughts of actual users.

Benefits
- Captures User Language: Is highly beneficial for developing user-friendly content structures and navigation.
- Identifies Gaps: It can draw attention to places where the established categories could be inadequate or overly strict.
- Boosts Creativity: It may lead to more creative and user friendly designs.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
General Feedback: Try to incorporate wildcard categories and cards to fully understand the different features of card sorting.
Specific Feedback: Include all the features available in the chosen app that you want to include in your final design.

Week 7
Specific Feedback: There are too many ease of use questions. Additionally, include action to observe how the user navigate the app. Label the screenshots indicating which is the home page, member page etc. Provide description on the rating system.

REFLECTION

Experience: I learned about the various ways to collect data before redesigning the UI app. I learned about using survey, interview, card sorting method, information architecture map and user flow chart.

Observations: It was really new to me and it took some time for me to understand each methods. After this project I understand how to use each method.

Findings: Research is an important step in UI/UX design to increase the usability of the app. It is conducted before the designing of the app so that the data collected can be applied to the design stage.
